ラニーニャ現象とカタールワールドカップ
１１月２０日からサッカーワールドカップ２０２２がカタールで開催されました。カタールは西アジアの国家で、中東のアラビア半島北東部に位置しています。そのため、１年銃を通して気温が高い気候となっています。サッカーのような激しく動くスポーツには、過酷な気温でしょう。そのため、史上初の冬季開催のサッカーワールドカップとなりました。ただ、カタールは冬季でも最高気温３０℃と気温が高いため、試合場となる８つのスタジアムには冷房が設置され、場内温度は２２℃になるように設定されているそうです。２２℃ならサッカー選手が激しく運動しても、熱中症になることはないでしょう。しかし、開幕戦は非常に寒かったという声が上がっています。なぜでしょうか？
朝晩は冷えるカタール
朝７時に開催された開幕戦は朝７時に行われました。カタールの最高気温は３０℃ですが、最低気温は２０℃と寒暖の差が激しいです。そのため、朝早い時間帯では気温が上がらず、スタジアム内もかなり寒かったことでしょう。朝晩に試合を行うようにスケジュールを組めば、スタジアムの冷房施設は不要だったかもしれません。もっとも、近年の異常気象から油断は禁物なので、暑くなるリスクを勘案した結果、冷房施設を設置したのかもしれません。

現在、ラニーニャ現象が発生している最中です。ラニーニャ現象は太平洋赤道域の日付変更線付近から南米沿岸にかけて平年より海水温が低い現象です。ラニーニャ現象が発生すると、日本では冬に豪雪となることが知られています。一方、カタールではラニーニャ現象はどのような影響を与えるのでしょうか？気象庁のホームページによると、ラニーニャ現象が発生した場合、この季節、アラビア半島は少雨になるそうです。つまり、昼は太陽を遮る雲が無いため気温が上昇し、夜は地上の熱を留めておくことが出来ず、放射冷却で気温が低下することになります。カタールワールドカップでは、朝晩の試合はとても寒い中行われることになるかもしれません。ラニーニャ現象は春には終息するという予想です。少し先の話なので、ワールドカップではラニーニャ現象の影響は避けられないでしょう。

La Niña Phenomenon and Qatar World Cup

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency's website, if a La Niña event occurs, the Arabian Peninsula will experience little rain this season. In other words, the temperature rises during the day because there are no clouds to block the sun, and at night the heat cannot be retained on the ground, and the temperature drops due to radiative cooling. At the Qatar World Cup, morning and evening games may be played in very cold weather. The La Niña phenomenon is expected to end in spring. It's a little further away, so the World Cup will be unavoidably affected by the La Niña phenomenon.
