古代に生きていた魚類の化石
最近、アルゼンチンで発見された恐竜の化石は世界最大級の草食恐竜であったというニュースが報じられました。発見された化石から全長約30メートル、体重50トンと推定されました、大腿骨だけで2メートルほどあり、大人3人がかりでようやく持ち上げられる大きさでした。この草食恐竜は、1億年ほど前の白亜紀後期に生息し、化石には何度も転倒した痕跡があったため、ハードボイルドを意味するチュカロサウルス・ディリピエンダと命名されています。そこで、魚の化石はどのような物が見つかっているのか、調べてみました。写真は、中国で良く見つかっているリコプテラという小さな魚の化石です。
リコプテラは最も原始的な魚類の一種です。
リコプテラの化石は、アジア東部から中生代ジュラ紀後期（約１億６３５０万年前）から白亜紀前期（１億５０万年）にかけての地層から発見されています。背びれが後方にあり臀(しり)びれの上方近くにあることなどが特徴です。現在生息している魚の中では、淡水魚のアロワナの仲間に近い魚とされています。アロワナが古代魚として認定されている要因の一つでしょう。リコプテラの化石は２０００円前後からと比較的安価で販売されています。もちろん、状態によっては高額になることもあります。
世界最大の魚竜の化石
水系に生息する生物の中で、もっとも大きい化石はイギリスで発見されました。このニュースは、２０２２年にCNNで報道されました。全長約１０メートルで、頭骨の重さは１トンになるそうです。この化石化した水生生物は、恐竜と同年代に生息していた水生爬虫（はちゅう）類の魚竜です。今回発見された魚竜の化石は、イルカに似た体形をしています。この魚竜は２億５０００万年前に最初に地球上に現れ、９０００万年前ごろに絶滅しました。今回発見された魚竜の化石は１億８０００年前に生息していたと推測されています。化石の個体は食物連鎖の頂点に君臨し、他の魚竜や大型の魚類のほか、捕獲できればイカも食べていただろうと、考えられています。
世界最古の魚類の化石ミロクンミンギア
ミロクンミンギアは中国で発見された世界最古の魚の化石です。漢字では「昆明魚」と書きます。ミロクンミンギアは古生代カンブリア紀前期中盤（約5億2,400万年前）に生息していたと考えられています。カンブリア紀というと、三葉虫なども生息していた時代です。全長は2.6cm 程度で比較的小型の魚の化石です。かなり強く扁平な体型であったようです。はっきりした背鰭と、やや曖昧な腹びれが区別できました。体の後端近くに肛門があったらしいです。
現在の魚類も、数億年後には化石として発見されるかもしれません。ただ人類もそこまで生き残っているか、不明ですよね。人類は、果たして地球温暖化を乗り越えられるのでしょうか？ひょっとすると人類が一旦全滅して、次に出現する知的生命体が人類の化石と共に発見するかもしれませんね。
